Join us for a free day of celebration of experiences, creativity and ideas about sparking imagination to engage in reading and writing as pleasure and play.
The 9th Pan-African Literacy for All and 10th Reading Association of South Africa (RASA) National Literacy Conference, sponsored by Oxford University Press, will be hosting a free Family and Community Literacy Day on Saturday 5 September 2015, 10:00 to 16:30 at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town.
The aim of the day is to ignite imagination and inform the community about what is possible in the literacy arena. Many literacy influencers such as Nal’ibali, Shine, Wordworks, FunDza, Biblionef and The Bookery, will be present to host discussions on topics including: how to start a reading club, experiences on setting up a school library and how to ignite imagination and creativity with young children.
The programme will also include fun activities like storytelling, performances by rap artists, plays, workshops and panel discussions on ways that literacy is explored and celebrated in various communities.
Highlights from the programme include:
- Meet Gcina Mhlope and Sindiwe Magona, two respected storytellers and authors
- Listen to the gifted Dizu Plaatjies who combines music and storytelling
- Come and find out how schools have used volunteers to support reading initiatives
- Learn how Book Buddies have changed the reading culture of a school in Khayelitsha
- Enter Nal’ibali’s multilingual national storytelling competition, Story Bosso
- Watch a theatre performance of How Stories Began by Jungle Theatre
- Get to meet your favourite canine character from Oxford Reading Tree, Floppy the dog, and join him during the day for storytelling and activities
- Come listen to a panel discussion on Illiteracies where the Underground Library in Mohlakeng and Emile YX, founder of Black Noise and Heal the Hood, will present imaginative grassroots projects
- Find out how to get a library up and running in your school by visiting The Bookery lounge
Entry to all events on the Family and Community Literacy Day is free, and all members of the public are welcome.
