August is TVET College month

by | Aug 18, 2016 | Higher Education News

As part of the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) ‘Decade of the Artisan’ initiative (read our previous blogpost about the Decade of the Artisan here), the Department has declared August as ‘TVET College Month’.  During the month of August, TVET Colleges are expected to invite school learners, SETA’s (Sector Education and Training Authorities) and industry to the colleges to promote Artisan training and development programmes.

It is not only the colleges themselves that are getting involved in ‘TVET College Month’, but the DHET is also actively involved in informing the youth of their training options.  A number of activities are happening in August in support of ‘TVET College Month’. The first event  was the official launch of Vhembe TVET College on 01 August.  The DHET will be running two Blitz Awareness campaigns: one in the Free State and one at South West Gauteng TVET College.  During the Blitz Awareness campaigns, the focus will be on young people who have exited the education system and informing them about their career and study options.  The Blitz Awareness campaigns will be followed by a Mass Career Exhibition at Ikhala TVET College (Queenstown).  The month will culminate in the TVET Students’ National Debate in Durban on 31 August.

The activities of the TVET Colleges, DHET, SETA’s and industry are making a difference in addressing the skills shortage in South Africa.

Oxford University Press Southern Africa publishes a range of TVET textbooks and resources carefully developed for the TVET student at N4, N5 and N6 level. The Succeed In series links theory to industry, building skills while meeting the requirements of the current syllabus in an accessible way. All the textbooks are available in print and electronic format.
