Author Mark Maritz unpacks how the new fourth edition of Operations Management has been updated to include discussion of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations, and how these can be integrated into the operations of a business to further sustainability.

In recent years, there has been growing awareness and concern about the impact of business operations on the environment and society. As a result, sustainability has become an increasingly important issue for businesses to address. However, integrating sustainability principles into core operations management can be a daunting task. That’s where a new textbook comes in, which integrates core operations management and sustainability principles with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The SDGs, also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 goals adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. They aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. The SDGs are important because they provide a framework for businesses to align their operations with the broader societal and environmental goals. By integrating the SDGs into core operations management, businesses can create more sustainable and socially responsible practices.

The new textbook, titled Operations Management 4th edition provides a guide to integrating core operations management and sustainability principles with the SDGs. The textbook covers a wide range of topics, including supply chain management, process improvement, and sustainability. It also includes case studies and examples from a variety of industries, demonstrating how businesses can successfully integrate sustainability principles into their operations.

One of the key features of the textbook is its focus on the SDGs. Each chapter is aligned with one or more of the SDGs, highlighting how businesses can contribute to achieving these goals through their operations. For example, the chapter on supply chain management discusses how businesses can work with suppliers to ensure that their products are produced in a sustainable and ethical manner, contributing to SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth) and SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production).

Overall, Operations Management 4e is an important resource for lecturers looking to integrate sustainability principles into their operations management courses. By aligning operations with the SDGs, businesses can create more sustainable and socially responsible practices, contributing to a better future for all.
