Sindiwe Magona on the Power of Words

by | Mar 25, 2015 | Dictionaries

Sindiwe Magona understands the power of words. As a writer, as a teacher, as a motivational speaker and as an activist – she has used words and her ability with them to make her mark on the world.

Sindiwe has an impressive portfolio including poetry, plays and novels – and a remarkable collection of awards and honours. Her power with words is by no means exclusive to her literature and she has used her ability to become a potent activist . . . even working for the United Nations.

“Words are what make us human,” says Sindiwe. “You grow with the more words you get inside yourself and own.” Oxford University Press Southern Africa deeply shares this sentiment and believes that words, and in turn knowledge and education, are an essential tool to uplift and empower lives and better societies.

Oxford University Press Southern Africa has decided to celebrate its centenary by sharing 20 000 dictionaries with those who would not otherwise be able to have them, through the Every Child Deserves a Dictionary Campaign. OUPSA has already started to distribute 10 000 dictionaries.

If you, like Sindiwe, believe words can make a difference, you can donate one of the remaining 10 000 dictionaries to a needy child at no cost to yourself Click here to pledge: everychild.oxford.co.za
