Oxford’s Literacy Magazine: A, B, See! volume. 3

by | Oct 15, 2025 | Schools News

In the 2025 edition of our Oxford literacy magazine, we build on the themes of the second volume with the focus on how Mother Tongue-based Bilingual Education (MTbBE) is gaining traction as a transformative approach to improving literacy and encouraging educational equality.

Articles and insights included in this edition comprise the following:

Page 5 explores how our partnership with AVBOB strengthens young learners learning to read in their mother tongue by providing mobile trolley libraries through the Road to Literacy campaign.

Through workshops and training, many teachers partner with OUP to upskill themselves through professional development courses that are accredited and help teachers strengthen the partnership between reading and writing. Read the article: The power of professional development to transform multilingual classrooms on pages 6 and 7 to see the impact such training is having on teachers.

OUPSA’s partnerships with AVBOB (as explored on pages 11 and 12) and academics such as Dr Zelda Barends, help us produce content that supports mother tongue-based bilingualism. Partnerships, however, can involve many partners who bring different skills, focus or content to a collaboration. An example of this is explored in the article starting on page 13, Strengthening literacy: a case study from the Northern Cape.

And finally, don’t miss our centre spread! It features a 2026 pull-out year planner.

As South Africa’s leading literacy publisher, Oxford University Press offers solutions to address the reading crisis in our country and support learners in achieving literacy success.
