Paul Ng’ambi is a qualified and experienced Science, Physics and Chemistry teacher with over 22 years of teaching experience in both basic and secondary schools. He currently serves as the Head of the Natural Sciences Department at Northmead Secondary School in Lusaka. His extensive experience in science education, coupled with his passion for quality teaching and learning resources, has contributed to his involvement in educational publishing.

What is the biggest change CBC expects from teachers in the classroom, and how does Oxford’s Learner’s Books and Teacher’s Guides support that change?
The biggest change is the change to making lessons completely learner-centred, where the role of the teacher is to be the facilitator during the lessons and not the bearer of all knowledge. Oxford’s Learner’s Books and Teacher’s Guides are the practical guide which makes the conversion easier.
Many teachers are new to the CBC. What advice would you give them to feel more confident using this new curriculum?
Education is constantly dynamic and has to respond to the changes of modern society and the world at large, therefore teachers should feel confident and comfortable using this new approach as it is a response to the demands of society and the world at large in terms of education.
Oxford’s Learner’s Books and Teacher’s Guides make it easy as it is designed and structured in a way that makes the competence-based approach of education practical and easy to implement.
Which feature of the textbook supports teachers in guiding learners from understanding new concepts to applying them independently, and how can it be used in the classroom?
The most outstanding feature of Oxford’s Learner’s Books and Teacher’s Guides is that they support teachers in effectively implementing the competency-based approach to education. The textbooks place strong emphasis on learner-centred activities, providing a wide range of engaging tasks that are carefully designed to develop critical-thinking, problem solving, and practical application skills. These activities enable learners to apply their knowledge and skills to address real-life challenges and solve everyday problems.
What are some simple ways teachers can use Oxford’s Learner’s Books to support competence-based learning, not just content coverage?
The various and simple ways which teachers can use Oxford’s Learner’s Books and Teacher’s Guides to support competence-based education, and not just covering content, are by taking advantage of the lesson activities which are well structured and articulated and easy to implement in any Zambian classroom setup. These activities, assessments and exercises are designed and structured to fully engage the learners and develop competences which are necessary as prescribed in the competence-based curriculum.

The teacher can even use the pair or group activities and create “tailor-made” activities which may serve the same purpose depending on the uniqueness of the environment and circumstances.
